Marti Plager Artist
Statement
My work is about connections: connections to the past, to the present, to my surroundings and to God. The quilts I create reflect my positive view of life as
well as my love of fabric, thread and the sewing machine. For me,
life is enriched with diverse experiences and amazing opportunities
that should be embraced. I am fascinated by the patterns found in
both man-made objects and nature but find myself focusing on the
details rather than the macro elements of these objects.
I work primarily with commercial and hand-dyed cotton fabric. When I
dye my fabrics I use MX fiber reactive dyes. I have recently been exploring surface design techniques, primarily screen-printing with thickened dye or thickened discharge products such as bleach or thiox. Flour paste and soy wax resists are also techniques that play a role in my newest work. But I still love to sew seams to put together the various fabrics. I believe in using the
best quality materials available and creating work as archival as
possible. One of my major interests is the use of the quilting
stitches to integrate and enhance the design as well adding texture.
